Extended Essay

The extended essay is a required component of the IB Diploma Program.  It is an externally assessed piece of independent research into a topic chosen by the student, which is presented in a formal piece of writing of 4,000 words or less.

Yes, the Extended Essay is a required component of the IB Diploma Program.

Research and writing support is provided through student's Theory of Knowledge class. In addition, each student is a assigned a supervising teacher to guide them through the process. 

The aims of the extended essay are to provide students with the opportunity to:

• engage in independent research with intellectual initiative and rigor
• develop research, thinking, self-management and communication skills
• reflect on what has been learned throughout the research and writing process
