School Nurse role and my role School Nurses promote student health and wellness, to enhance student learning. My role is to manage health care (during the school day) for students with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, hearing conditions, ADHD and severe allergies, and many other conditions, in collaboration with teachers, administrators, and other school staff. I will provide emergency care for illnesses and injuries, teach students skills to manage their health, refer health concerns to clinics/physicians, assist families to identify health resources, and cooperate with local health officials and state public health departments in matters pertaining to community health.
I am a member of the Child Study Team (special education), the Student Assistance Team (SAT), and the attendance team. I often participate in 504 meetings. (A 504 plan is for students needing special accommodations who are not in special education.) Also, I lead the Wellness Commitee.
Should you keep your teen home from school due to illness?
Keep your him/her home if he or she:
Ordinarily we want students to be in school even if they seem a little tired or irritable in the morning as long as they do not have any of the signs or symptoms listed above.
If student is at home sick, please call the school attendance line daily to report the reason for absence.
If a student will be out of school for three weeks or longer due to an illness, injury or surgery the student may qualify for Homebound Services. Please contact me to obtain information about this service.
Helpful Website A very helpful website is www.studentwellness.spps.org It contains much health information and will allow you to download health related forms.
Please contact me if you have any questions/concerns about your teen's health! I have a direct line and it receives messages! 651-744-3819
HealthStart Clinic Students at Highland may use HealthStart, our school-based clinic. The clinic provides a variety of services including sports physicals, immunizations/flu shots, nutrition education, health education, counseling and more. Students need an appointment to use the clinic. If you want to contact HealthStart Clinic staff, you may call them at 651.690.7667. The clinic and the school nurse share a waiting room but I am a St Paul Schools employee and the clinic staff are employees of HealthStart. We are very fortunate to have a school based clinic at Highland.
